Historic center of Luxembourg – UNESCO World Heritage
Founded in the year 963, the Old City of Luxembourg turned a rock into a legendary fortress among the most powerful in Europe of the 16th century. The 17th century saw the creation of the famous casemates, subterranean vaulted spaces for refuge during military attacks. Despite the dismantling of this spectacular defence complex in the 19th century, the most visually arresting parts of the fortress have survived and can be seen during your travel to visit Luxembourg. The fortress and the Old City are listed as World Heritage by UNESCO since 1994.
The cradle of Europe
Besides Brussels and Strasbourg, the capital city of the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg is one of the three European cities hosting the most important European institutions. Luxembourg houses the General Secretariat of the European Parliament, the European Investment Bank, as well as the Court of Justice and the European Court of Auditors.’
